Creative Continuum:
Business and the Creative Process
A Mini MBA for Artists
January 4 - 19, 2007
A collaboration between MassArt and Bentley College
In association with Fort Point Artists Coalition, the Arts & Business
Council, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and UrbanArts Institute
There is increasing recognition in the business world that the companies
that will thrive in the future are the ones that will innovate radically and
approach challenges creatively. The Creative Continuum is a course geared to
artists and designers who would like to develop skills in applying the
creativity and mind set they nurtured and developed as an artist to the
business realm. This program is a unique opportunity to explore the emerging
world of collaboration between the business and creative communities.
Held over three weeks, this course offers participants insight into the
issues and workings of business through both lecture and hands-on working
strategy sessions. Lively informative lectures, fashioned as a "mini-MBA,"
will quickly provide the student with fundamental principles of business.
Then, in working sessions, participants put their creative skills and
experience to use collaborating with representatives of select businesses on
a real strategic problem or challenge they face.
Lecture Sessions (10 - 3 hour sessions)
Bentley professors will lecture on fundamental aspects of each major area of
business, including business history, organizational structure, behavior and
change, accounting and finance, marketing, operations, and strategy
(including innovation). These sessions will inform the working sessions
with select business representatives.
Hands-on Working Sessions (10 - 3 hour sessions)
Students will be divided into four teams of five each, each working directly
with a participating company on an actual strategic challenge. The focus
will be on problem-solving as opposed to decision-making. Groups will work
independently of one another but may meet at the end of each afternoon to
discuss progress. Facilitators will work with each group throughout.
Limited to twenty participants, and admission is by application.
Cost: $500
