Hey everyone -

Our own Rachel Goodwin is quoted in the Globe today in an editorial about
the hearings that Deval Patrick's people have been holding over the last
couple of weeks (it's all about Dorchester - the other person quoted in the
editorial is my former thesis advisor at UMass, Rachel Rubin).

FYI- in case anyone is in the holiday spirit and has a bit of money to do
some good - at the hearing Rachel Goodwin spoke about how difficult it is to
be a working musician in Boston these day (for anyone who doesn't know her,
she lives on Ocean St. and is the driving force behind Ashmont Hill Chamber
Music. She teaches piano also, and said that she gets frustrated because
the only kids who can afford to take piano lessons at the price she needs to
charge to make a living, are kids from affluent families. Therefore, kids
who can't afford lessons, might never develop their potential, since the
learning has to start at such an early age. She mentioned that the Epiphany
School had identified a child who shows great promise as a piano student,
but now the school and/or Rachel are forced to try to find someone to pay
for this child's lessons. So, if anyone out there with some extra money
wants to contribute to the classical piano education of the next generation,
I'm sure Rachel would be glad to hear from you. (I hope she's not mad at me
for posting this, but her appeal was very compelling.!) I don't know what
the cost would be, but it seems like a good investment!
