The one-woman play, A Woman Ain't I, about abolitionist Sojourner Truth and starring Kathryn Woods, will be presented at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15 in the meeting room of the Dorchester Historical Society, 195 Boston Street, Dorchester MA.
Guest speaker Kathryn Woods will portray Sojourner Truth, known for her famous Aint I a Woman? speech of the 1851 Womens Right Convention, was a founder of the nineteenth-century civil rights movement.
Sold into slavery at a young age, Sojourner Truth, later in life, joined other notable abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman as a crusader for God and human rights. During her performance, Ms. Woods recalls Sojourner Truths early days as a slave, details her relationship with God, and shares poignant stories of her days walking through the American landscape. She uses Sojourners own words and the spiritual music she may have sung to recreate this inspiring woman. Woods has recreated scenes from her life, as she journeyed through pre- and post-Civil War America, preaching against slavery and for the rights of women.
Kathryn Woods, a Massachusetts native, has acted in Boston for 16 years and her credits include performances with Theatreworks, Peoples Theater, The Wheelock Family Theater, and the Underground Railway Theater. In addition, Woods has performed in theater festivals in Russia and the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. She and Sojourner have been seen on C-Span, heard on NPR and witnessed in 40 states.
