POET SEKOU SUNDIATA SPEAKS AT THE ICA APRIL 18, 6:30 p.m.
(BOSTON) The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) continues its What New Is
lecture series
with Sekou Sundiata, the Harlem-born poet who writes for print, music and
theater, on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at 6:30 p.m.
Sekou Sundiata is to contemporary African American poetry what Marvin Gaye
was to modern soul. He came of age during the Black Arts/Black Aesthetic
movement of the 60's and 70's, and his work draws from African-American
culture, with an emphasis on music. He has been a Sundance Institute
Screenwriting Fellow, a Columbia University Revson Fellow, and the first
Writer-in-Residence at the New School University in New York. He was
featured in the Bill Moyers' PBS series on poetry, The Language of Life, and
as part of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on HBO. He has recorded and
performed with a range of musicians, including Craig Harris, David Murray,
Nona Hendryx and Vernon Reid. His first recording, The Blue Oneness of
Dreams, and its successor, longstoryshort, are both rich with the sounds of
blues, funk, jazz and African and Afro-Caribbean percussion. He has toured
internationally with his band, and as part of Ani DiFranco's "Rhythm and
News Tour." Sundiata is currently a professor at Eugene Lang College in New
York City.
At the ICA, Sundiata shares his ideas about engaging diverse community
perspectives through the arts and developing his new work, the 51st (dream)
state.
What New Is is sponsored by Fiduciary Trust Company.
The Institute of Contemporary Art, located at 100 Northern Avenue, is open
Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 am - 5 pm; Thursday and Friday, 10 am - 9 pm; and
Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - 5 pm. For more information, call 617-478-3100
