This amendment will increase the appropriation for the Massachusetts
Cultural Facilities Fund to $13 million, an increase of $3 million from the
proposed House budget.

In these tight budget times, the state must invest in programs like the
Massachusetts Cultural facilities Fund because it generates, creates jobs,
and helps to revitalize our cities and towns.
This year, 201 cultural organizations serving 91 cities and towns applied
for support from the new Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund.

The quality and quantity of grant applications, received by the
Massachusetts Cultural Council and MassDevelopment on March 15, demonstrate
two key points:

* The need for strategic investment in our cultural organizations, the
infrastructure for tourism, is great.

* The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund is creating tremendous
opportunity for economic growth and revitalization in cities and towns
across the Commonwealth.

Furthermore, every dollar of state investment generates additional private
investment.  Cultural Facilities grants must be matched by the private
sector 1 to 1 for the smallest grants up to 5 to 1 for the largest.
The Massachusetts Cultural facilities Fund is an investment in the
infrastructure for Massachusetts tourism, our third largest industry with a
$3.1 billion payroll across 147,600 jobs.  Non-profit cultural organizations
are a significant job base of the state with a statewide payroll of $247
million and in-state spending on for-profit vendors of $1.1 billion
annually.

Please urge your state representative to support this valuable economic
development tool.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Dan Hunter
Executive Director
Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, & Humanities
