2007 Brick Contest
The Dorchester Historical Society (DHS) and the Dorchester Arts Collaborative (DAC) announce the third annual Brick Contest for 2007 in honor of the Edward A. Huebener Brick collection.
Huebener collected one brick from each Dorchester house he thought significant, often when the house was being demolished. He then chose local artists to paint a picture of the house onto the brick. The collection, which numbers over 100 bricks, is not only a record of the architectural history of Dorchester but also an intriguing and possibly unique form of folk art. Edward Huebener, who was born in Dorchester in 1851 and died here in 1936, lived at a time when many of the fine, early Dorchester houses remained standing, and some of Dorchester’s early homes are known only from the paintings in the collection.
DHS is asking artists to paint a picture of their favorite Dorchester building or other identifiable Dorchester scene on a brick. The building can be historic or not, standing or demolished. Two first prizes will be awarded in the amount of $300 each in exchange for which DHS will keep the winning bricks. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges appointed by DHS, and the judges will pick winners that in their opinion exhibit the best talent and originality while paying reverence to the architecture and/or history of our community. The decision of the judges is final. The deadline for entries is October 1, 2007, and all of the entries will be exhibited as part of the opening reception for Dorchester Open Studios.
Bricks should be sent or brought to the Dorchester Historical Society at 195 Boston Street, 02125, during open hours (2nd Sundays from 11 - 4) or by appointment by calling Earl Taylor during the day at 800 663-6063.
