“Their Eyes Were Watching…”
Artwork by Cynthia Marie Bogues 2006 and 2007
The theme of the work that I am showing at the Artist’s Foundation @ The Distillery was inspired by the title of a book written by Zora Neale Hurston and a quote by William Makepeace Thackeray.
I heard this quote while watching the movie “The Crow” starring the late Jason Lee (son of the late Martial Artist/actor Bruce Lee). In a gritty, dark scene, (if I am remembering correctly) he rescues a child and it’s mother who I believe was a drug addict. He forces her to look into a mirror and he says: “Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of little children”. I found that statement to be so moving and truthful, because usually, the first person that you see and experience as a human is your mother. She is the connection that you have to life, until you are old enough to understand the religious beliefs that your family is connected to.
Last summer, after buying a book (Portraits-Steve McCurry-Phaidon 1999) featuring some of the most incredible, beautiful people from around the world, I was inspired to do a painting using a few faces from the book as reference. While admiring the faces of children from different countries, I became interested in researching what type of cultures these children were a part of. I was then inspired to create an “out of the ordinary” background featuring religious symbols and then pair the main piece with several individual pieces featuring children with the religious symbols of their culture reflected in their eyes. Hence the inspiration of the title of Zora’s book “Their Eyes Were Watching God”.
In the main piece, the children are looking out into the “audience” which could also inspire us to think that the “god” that they are watching is within each and every one of us.
Please join me on March 10th, 2007, 3pm-5pm for a reception at the Artist's Foundation @The Distillery, 516 East Second Street, 1st Floor -Boston, MA 02127. This is my very 1st "one woman show" and I would be honored to see you there. Please forward to others who may be interested in attending this event.
I will be gallery sitting on March 3rd, from 12 noon until 5pm, and feel free to come then, as well.
Thank you all for your support throughout the years!
