Coming Soon: Arts & Healthcare Website; A Guide to the New Health Insurance
Law for the Cultural Community

Arts & Health Insurance Workshops Scheduled Across the State

Massachusetts Health Care Reform Update

Dear Friends,
This month marks the next step in the implementation of the new
Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law, landmark legislation to provide health
insurance for nearly every person in the Commonwealth. Enrollment begins
this month for subsidized coverage for eligible residents earning between
101 % up to 300% of federal poverty level. Residents earning less than 100%
of the federal poverty level will receive free health insurance.
The new law will bring many changes affecting the cultural community.
Working closely with the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural
Development, the Massachusetts Advocates for the Arts, Sciences, and the
Humanities (MAASH), the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), Artists
Foundation and ArtistLink have joined together to coordinate information so
that every member of the cultural community understands the benefits,
eligibility requirement, and responsibilities that the new law creates for
individual artists and cultural organizations and their employees.
Website & Workshops
We will be posting detailed information on our websites by the middle of
January and we will be presenting health care workshops around the state to
answer your questions. Look for the e-mail notification or on our websites
for the workshop schedule.
Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law
The Health Care Reform Law affects everyone. It will create opportunities
for some artists and their families to secure subsidized health insurance;
and, for others, it will create more affordable health insurance. The new
law does not solve every health care issue, but, at a minimum, hundreds of
thousands of uninsured people will obtain affordable, high-quality coverage
over the next three years. The new law earned bi-partisan support and also
support from health care advocates, the insurance industry, medical
providers, and the business community. And, the new law has received
national attention for its effort to achieve universal health insurance in
the state.
The new health care system is a significant change with potential benefits
for artists and art-related employers alike. However, to navigate the new
system successfully, it is important for you to take initiative and the time
to educate yourself about the new requirements. Look for our e-mails
announcing the new website and workshop schedule soon.

Thank you,
Dan Hunter on behalf of the Arts Health Care Coalition
MAASH, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Artist Foundation and ArtistLink
