Books of Hope (BOH) is a literacy and writing program for youth ages 13-23
begun in Somerville’s Mystic Housing projects in 1999 by author Anika
Nailah. The program trains young people in four components of being an author:
writing, publishing, performance, and entrepreneurship while developing
creativity and self-esteem. 125 young authors have published 100 volumes of poetry,
fiction, essay, memoir, self-help, and hip-hop lit, as well as plays and
screenplays since its inception. It is supported by the Cahn Funds for Social
Change, the Dreuding Foundation, Hunt Alternatives Fund, the Somerville
Housing Authority, and YouthReach, a special initiative of the Massachusetts
Cultural Council.
Happy Soulstice!
