Come celebrate the summer with youth authors of the Books of Hope program
as they read from their newly released books and sign copies at Porter Square
Books, 25 White St, Cambridge (in the mall off Mass Ave), 6-8 pm. Special
guest poet and mentor, Askia Toure will also read from his latest book, “Mother
Earth Responds: Green Poems and Alternative Visions”. Respond with the earth
and the sun to the fresh voices of the next generation!
Books of Hope (BOH) is a literacy and writing program for youth ages 13-23
begun in Somerville’s Mystic Housing projects in 1999 by author Anika
Nailah. The program trains young people in four components of being an author:
writing, publishing, performance, and entrepreneurship while developing
creativity and self-esteem. 125 young authors have published 100 volumes of poetry,
fiction, essay, memoir, self-help, and hip-hop lit, as well as plays and
screenplays since its inception. It is supported by the Cahn Funds for Social
Change, the Dreuding Foundation, Hunt Alternatives Fund, the Somerville
Housing Authority, and YouthReach, a special initiative of the Massachusetts
Cultural Council.
Happy Soulstice!
