Henry K Sullivans Show A Stroke of Genius
Show runs Sept 8- Oct. 11 2007
Opening Reception 3-6pm Saturday September 8 2007
On September 8th Ahimsa Studio will host a very
special exhibition. This show features the paintings
of Henry K Sullivan, a man who suffered a stroke 15
years ago, then started to paint. He has painted
prolifically since then. Sullivan is a completely
untrained painter from Dorchester who uses his stroke
as a major subject of his painting. It is his belief
that the process of having a stroke sometimes causes
the birth or creation of a new person different from
the person who existed before the stroke. Consequently
all or most of his paintings are about his stroke and
his new life. He paints life, stroke and rebirth. His
passion for his subject is almost religious. His Irish
Catholic background is obvious in his iconography.
While not a trained painter Sullivan has developed a
painting technique and sense of composition that is
unique. He begins all of his paintings from a seed,
a spot on the page from which he grows his paintings.
Often abstract images and representational images
compete for a place on the page. If you are looking
for the next Museum School wunderkind this isnt it,
but if you are looking for an insight into the
artistic side of stroke this is a show you really
should take some time out to see.
