March hosts Women’s History Month and the Vernal Equinox. It is the beginning of spring, when hibernating organic material pushes through thawing soil and garden brush after months in the dark. References to gardening are rich in the arts. Ideas, images, and events are all seeds, shaped and planted by experience. These seeds, cultivated in the darkness of our subconscious, lay dormant—sometimes for years—gaining substance, strength and focus. In the protective world of our minds, they take form, grow roots and blossom, finally revealing their meaning to the world. These images then become new seeds for a new time and the cycle begins again. In the work of these eight artists you will share a glimpse of this metamorphic process. The exhibition will feature paintings, sculpture, mixed media, and collage that display organic shapes, sensuous color, natural forms, and enigmatic ephemera.
Exhibiting Boston artists are: Mireille Clapp, Lucilda Dassardo-Cooper, Laura Palmer Edwards, L’Merchie Frazier, Maya Freelon, Darrelle Ann Gane-McCalla, curator, Ekua Holmes and Maddu Huacuja.
The Gallery at the Piano Factory is the heart of the oldest residential artist’s community in Boston's South End. The Gallery is located in the 150-year old Chickering Piano Factory, which was established as an artists/residential space in 1974. Some of today's most notable visual and performing artists have called the Piano Factory home. The Piano Factory was constructed in 1853 as the "Chickering Pianoforte Manufactory" and produced grand and baby grand pianos, square pianos, spinets, and harpsichords. Crafted from rare Brazilian woods, the instruments themselves were considered works of art.
Today, the Gallery at the Piano Factory exhibits the work of residents and visiting artists in a variety of mediums and a range of styles. Showcasing many of New England's premier creative talents, the Gallery continues the artistic legacy of the historic Chickering Piano Factory.
