Meet Anita Walker, MCC's New Executive Director
Cultural leaders are invited to participate in a statewide series of
round-table discussions on how the nonprofit cultural sector can work
together to position arts and culture at the center of efforts to stimulate
the economy, improve education, and enhance the quality of life in our
communities. The "MCC Summer Tour" marks the first opportunity to meet Anita
Walker, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Massachusetts Cultural
Council (MCC).

Senate Budget Increases Cultural Funding
The state Senate has approved a budget for the coming fiscal year that calls
for a slight increase for arts and cultural funding through the
Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). The Senate budget matched the House
plan by increasing MCC's appropriation by roughly $150,000 to just under
$12.3 million for fiscal 2008, which begins July 1.
The Senate budget also included a much smaller figure of $1.23 million for a
second year of grants for the Cultural Facilities Fund; the House budget had
called for $10 million for the Fund, which provides grants to cultural
organizations, schools, and communities to build, repair, and expand their
facilities.
An amendment filed by Senator Brian Joyce of Milton to match the House
commitment to the Cultural Facilities Fund was rejected. Joyce is Senate
Chair of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development. The
two chambers will work to reconcile the different figures in a conference
committee before the Legislature sends its final budget recommendation to
the Governor for his approval. The Cultural Facilities Fund is currently at
$13 million.
