DORCHESTER (MA) OPEN STUDIOS PLANNED FOR OCT. 26-28; PROGRAM INCLUDES 100
EXHIBITING ARTISTS AND A PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE RAINBOW GAS TANK BY CORITA
KENT

Presenting Sponsors are Mt. Washington Bank and SBLI

(Dorchester, MA - Oct. 1, 2007) The doors to Dorchester's art community will
be open the weekend of Oct, 26-28, 2007, as the neighborhood celebrates its
sixth annual neighborhood-wide Dorchester Open Studios. In addition to the
traditional Open Studios fare of visual arts displays, organizers have
scheduled a juried show of Dorchester artists, and a panel discussion on the
art of Corita Kent and the Rainbow Gas Tank.

Artist Studios, Group Sites, Galleries and Home Studios
On Saturday and Sunday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., about 100 visual artists
will exhibit their work. Dorchester's three artist studio buildings -
Humphreys Street (11 Humphreys St., near Uphams Corner); Pearl Street/Ahimsa
Studios (11 Pearl St., near Savin Hill) and Walter Baker Lofts (1231 Adams
St., in Lower Mills) - will all be open. In addition, many artists who
don't have studios will exhibit at three group sites: First Parish Church
(10 Parish St., Meetinghouse Hill), and the Great Hall (6 Norfolk St.,
Codman Square) as well as The Boston Home (2049 Dorchester Ave.), where
residents of the home for the chronically ill and permanently disabled will
exhibit alongside their teacher, painter Susan Krause and other artists.
The Red Dot Gallery (1162 Washington St., Lower Mills) will be open with
their current exhibit, and visitors are also invited to stop by DotArt's
cozy and vibrant offices (1775A Dorchester Ave., St. Mark's) to see some
student art. Several artists will be exhibiting in home studios, and
Dorchester's newest potential artist space, Fox Hall (558 Columbia Rd.,
Uphams Corner) will have a "Temporary Contemporary Gallery."

Opening Reception
The weekend will open on Friday, Oct. 26 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. when Ahimsa
Gallery (11 Pearl Street, Savin Hill) hosts an Open Studios reception that
is free and open to the public. On display at Ahimsa is a juried show
featuring 18 Dorchester artists. The short speaking program will include
the announcement of the winners of the third annual Dorchester Brick Contest
sponsored by The Dorchester Historical Society (DHS). The contest takes
place in honor of the DHS' Edward A. Huebener Brick collection, which
depicts various buildings in Dorchester before demolition. The DHS issued a
call to artists to paint a Dorchester building on a brick.

Corita Kent/Rainbow Tank Panel Discussion
On Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 pm, the Dorchester Arts Collaborative (DAC) and
the DHS present a panel discussion on the art of Corita Kent and the history
of the Rainbow Gas Tank at the Savin Hill Yacht Club, (400 Morrissey Blvd.).
Panelists for this unique event will be Alexandra Carrera, Executive
Director of the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles; Susan Dackerman, Carl A.
Weyerhaeuser Curator of Prints at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University;
Mickey Myers, artist, former Dorchester resident, Associate Producer of
Primary Colors: The Story of Corita, and life-long friend of Corita Kent;
former Boston Gas Company Public Relations Executive Frank Arricale and
former State Senator Paul White. The panel will be moderated by Ricardo
Baretto, Executive Director of Urban Arts at the Massachusetts College of
Art & Design. The panelists are expected to discuss the life and work of
Corita Kent, as well as the history of the gas tank, from its commissioning
to its repainting, including the controversy surrounding Corita's anti-war
activism and the siting of LNG tanks in such close proximity to a
neighborhood.

Related to the panel discussion, the Lower Mills Branch of the Boston Public
Library (27 Richmond St., Dorchester) offers multiple screenings of Primary
Colors: The Story of Corita. The hour-long PBS documentary produced in
1990, about the life and work of Corita Kent, artist, educator, former nun
and political activist, will be shown Monday Oct. 22 at 6:30 pm; Tuesday
Oct. 23 at 2 pm and Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 11 am. FREE.

Rev. Art's Art Sermon
On Sunday at First Parish Church's regular 11 a.m. Sunday service, Rev.
Arthur Lavoie will deliver a special art-themed sermon, "Beyond the Frame."
A piece of art captures light, shadow, color, movement, texture, image and
story within a certain framework. Great art points outside that framework,
calling us to look deeper, ask questions and find truth and meaning beyond
the boundaries of that particular piece of art. Our lives are like this as
well. When we are at our best we call ourselves and each other into deeper
levels of meaning and commitment.

Art & Architecture Bike Tour
On Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m., Common Boston and Mass Bike will host an
"Art & Architecture" Bike tour through Dorchester neighborhoods. For more
information contact <mailto:info at commonboston.org> info at commonboston.org.

Dorchester Open Studios is organized by the Dorchester Arts Collaborative, a
non-profit organization that seeks to stimulate economic and social change
through arts programming in Boston's largest and most diverse neighborhood.
Open Studios is grateful for the support its lead sponsors, Mt. Washington
Bank and SBLI, and The Dorchester Reporter, as well as the Massachusetts
Convention Center Authority and Boston Cultural Council. Additional support
provided by Corcoran Jennison Companies.

Programs will be available at all sites, and as an insert in The Dorchester
Reporter's October 8 edition. For more information go to www.thedac.org, or
