I have received several queries about the Dorchester street art project (aka
"dot aht"), and I want to address all the questions/concerns at once.
First of all, I am thrilled that there is interest from my fellow artists.
That is step 1!
Second, I have been keeping the project anonymous for a few reasons, but it
seems that I might be putting people off or just being confusing, and that
is the last thing I want to do. My name is Paige Davis (yes, like the host
of that tv show). I have lived in Fields Corner for about three years. I am
32 and work full-time as a graphic designer. I am almost finished with a
Masters Degree program at the New England School of Art and Design. My
thesis explores the role of the artist/designer as a community activist in
Dorchester. The project is happening in three parts: 1) working directly
with a teen group on an identity project; 2) working with youths on a
community art/photography project; and 3) creating a street art movement.
All of these pieces have been in process since last year, and are due to be
completed this summer.
One reason I chose to remain anonymous was because I really want this art
movement to be for everyone and by everyone. I don't want anyone to see it
as "my project." I want it to be "our project."
As for street art being legal...I think it all depends on how you do it, and
who sees you doing it. With "dot aht" I am specifically supporting
non-destructive and non-permanent art. However, if I was outside with a
stencil and a can of spray chalk (which is non-permanent and, as far as I
know, legal) I am guessing a passing police officer might have an issue. I'd
rather avoid that confrontation if I can.
Finally, I hope everyone was able to access the www.dotaht.com website. It
works best with Firefox on a Mac, just as every site should ;-) But it
should work on other platforms/browsers as well.
Feel free to keep sending questions my way. I am happy to do whatever it
takes to get this movement...moving! And if you do a project, don't forget
to send me photos for the website.
Thanks!
Paige
