The ICA is pleased to make a limited number of $5 tickets to members of the
Dorchester Arts Collaborative to "What New Is: Choreographer Elizabeth Streb
Talks with Theoretical Physicist Brian Greene." The program takes place
Tuesday, February 5 at 6:30 pm at the ICA, 100 Northern Avenue, Boston.
$5 tickets are available by calling (617) 478-3103 and asking for the
community discount.
Elizabeth Streb has been thrilling audiences with her choreography-which she
calls "POPACTION"-for the past two decades. Once described as "the Evel
Knievel of dance," she is trained in ballet and modern dance, and studies
physics. She has received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur "Genius
Award," two New York Dance and Performance awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship,
three New York Foundation for the Arts Awards, and several National
Endowment for the Arts fellowships. Intertwining the disciplines of dance,
extreme sports, and Hollywood stunt work, STREB's vocabulary combines
athleticism, strict precision, and daring. STREB vs. Gravity is a match-up
of the human body pitted against the phenomenal forces of everyday physical
action. Whether flying, falling, or seemingly suspended in mid-air, STREB's
dancers challenge nature, creating a new aesthetic of grace and danger.
Brian Greene is a theoretical physicist, and one of the country's most
famous string theorists. A child prodigy in mathematics, he could multiply
30-digit numbers at the age of five. In 6th grade, Greene was so far ahead
of his school in math that he had to find a tutor at Columbia University. He
entered Harvard in 1980 to major in physics, and with his bachelor's degree,
Greene went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He is the author of
several books, including The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden
Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory, a Pulitzer Prize
finalist, and The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space. Time. And the Texture of
Reality. He appears regularly on television, making guest appearances on
Charlie Rose, The Colbert Report, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, The Century
with Peter Jennings, CNN, TIME, Nightline in Primetime, Late Night with
Conan O'Brien, and The Late Show with David Letterman. He has been a
professor at Columbia University since 1996.
