Dear Joyce
The Adams St. Branch of the BPL is participating with UMass Boston in The
Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in
partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to
revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the
transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big
Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to
read for pleasure and enlightenment.
The book that is being used, and that everyone is encouraged to read (or
re-read!), is the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a
Mockingbird. We are having a series of programs here that explore the
several social themes woven into the fabric of the book, namely racism,
domestic violence, and stigma against mental illness.
As part of that, and in celebration of Women’s History Month, we are
presenting Defending Our Lives, an Academy Award winning documentary on
domestic violence. I’m attaching the flyer for the program, and I hope you
will pass this information along to any group that might find the subject
interesting or useful. There will be several staff members from the
Community Advocacy Program to facilitate a discussion afterwards.
Thanks!
Elisa
