Greetings!

Spring has sprung in New England, and NEFA's own "creative economy" is
abuzz.

Our New England Cultural Database has been re-designed and re-launched as
CultureCount. The launch is drawing notice and hundreds of new users, and I
encourage you to check it out! Other highlights in this issue:

Two new funding partners have come on board in the last couple of months.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has made possible new funding
for four national Contemporary Art Centers projects, each poised to grow the
base for national choreographic development in relation to our National
Dance Project. We're delighted that the Institute of Contemporary Art here
in Boston is a part of this effort.

A grant from the Bay and Paul Foundations will help make possible the
expansion of funding opportunities through the Native Arts @ NEFA program.

And last but not least, NEFA will roll out a new online grant application
system this fall. This much-anticipated advance will be user-friendly, save
paper, and increase our ability to analyze trends and our impact.

As always, we welcome your comments and feedback.

Best,

is actively seeking additional funding, which, paired with funding from the
Ford Foundation, Anonymous, and now Bay and Paul, will allow for additional
grants to a greater number of artists as well as other programmatic
activities.

080223580> IN THE SPOTLIGHT: ANIRUDDHA KNIGHT AND ENSEMBLE (BALA MUSIC AND
DANCE ASSOCIATION)

NEFA is always looking to share stories of its work with artists and
presenters, as well as with funders and partners. This month, Aniruddha
Knight and Ensemble (Bala Music and Dance Association) gets the spotlight.

"I don't think I even realized the impact this performance has not only for
us but also the country," remarked Pamela Tatge, Executive Director of the
Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University. Aniruddha Knight - the first
male dancer in nine generations of one of India's great professional
artistic families - began the national tour of From the Heart of a Tradition
at Wesleyan this spring. The last known practitioner of bharata natya,
Knight crossed the boundaries of a strong matrilineal tradition to carry on
this south Indian dance form made famous by his grandmother, Balasaraswati.

With production and touring support from NEFA's National Dance Project, New
England-based Knight and his company of musicians and vocalists performed
>From the Heart of a Tradition throughout the region, including
Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and then on
to national venues in Illinois, Washington, and Oregon.

Elaborating on the juxtaposition of tradition and boundary-crossing, Tatge
went on to explain that Balasaraswati herself performed at Wesleyan
University in 1962 -the first non-Westerner to do so. With From the Heart
of a Tradition, her grandson follows in her footsteps in more ways than one.
